As the Onondaga Lake cleanup continues, the DEC and Onondaga county are looking to the future of the lake as a recreational asset to Central New York. This new found enthusiasm brings with it two projects sure to interest the sportsmen in the area.

First a Public boat launch and visitor center will be constructed on the western shores of the lake, near exit 7 of Route 690. Honeywell is funding the design and construction of the launch. The site will include an ADA-compliant accessible shoreline fishing access, a trailer boat launch, car top/kayak launch and parking for approximately 30 vehicles with trailers with additional parking for cars only. Construction will begin after completion of the Honeywell remediation project, expected in 2017.

Second, a Governor Cuomo announced intentions to conduct a fishing tournament on Onondaga Lake in 2016. Since 2000, a total of 53 species of fish have been identified in the lake and interest in fishing the lake is growing.

Once a dead zone in the Heart of Syracuse, Onondaga Lake is rebounding quickly. These are two very good signs that in the years to come, Onondaga Lake will become the "recreation asset" the DEC and Onondaga County is claiming it to be.
