A new pilot program has been launched by the DEC, which should provide for a more accurate estimate of Whitetail Deer populations in the state. The pilot program will be in effect in a 1,325-square-mile portion of the state, consisting of three WMUs (7H, 8J, 8S).
Unlike the data-gathering methods employed by the state for the last 25 years, the methods used in the pilot program will take advantage of today’s technology, gathering more information from more people. Ultimately, more of us will be able to contribute to the data used by the DEC in their decision making.
Once the kinks have been worked out of the system, the DEC plans to roll out the new system to more WMUs.
