With a winter storm looming, the Almost-Annual New York State Crappie Derby still drew about 750 ice fishermen and 750 others. $8,000 in cash and prizes were awarded throughout the day in 15 mini-derbies.

Over 1500 square feet of building are built for the derby to house the judging booth, concessions, and booths for a few vendors and sponsors. Snow was cleared from a portion of the ice, providing ice skating opportunities for non-fishermen. Also, the Broome County Water Rescue Dive Team was on scene to demonstrate methods for surviving a fall through the ice (it can happen).

Founded in 1973, the derby grew from a local event with a purse of $150 to an event that draws thousands with a purse in the thousands. In 2014, the derby purse was $14,000. Although this year's purse saw a reduction from last year, the derby was once again huge success.
